US Salmonella Outbreak Tied to Bearded Dragons
The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that 44 cases of Salmonella across 25 states have been linked to people’s pet bearded dragons. Public health officials think the actual number of cases is much higher. While no deaths have been reported, 41% of the cases required hospitalization.
Why did the outbreak happen? Salmonella is commonly found in the digestive tracts of reptiles. Some scientists speculate that these recent cases may have been caused by a particular pet reptile food source, or even the fact that during the pandemic people have been spending more time interacting with their pet reptiles.
Because of the risk of Salmonella infection, public health experts recommend that reptile owners wash their hands with soap and water after handling, feeding, and cage cleaning.
