Study Shows How the Current Economy is Affecting Pet Owners

The American Pet Products Association’s ongoing Pulse pet ownership study has shifted its focus from how Covid impacts pet owners to how the current economic conditions are affecting pet owners.

Many of the pet owners surveyed for the study are reporting concerns about the economy. These financial concerns can impact how we care for our pets.

The current pet ownership report is available through the APPA’s website. Here are a few highlights from the study.

  • While most pet owners are worried that economic conditions in the US will worsen, and many express concerns about food and gas prices, only 36% worry about pet expenses and 16% think they may have to give up their pets for financial reasons.

  • Most pet owners are loyal to their pet food brands and report that they will not be changing brands due to price increases. Less than 25% of pet owners say they plan to spend less money on pet food.
  • Pet owners continue to be concerned about pet product supply chain issues and difficulties in obtaining their preferred pet products.

  • Pet owners most likely to express concerns about the cost of pet food and supplies are Millennials, followed by Gen Z, Gen X, and Baby Boomers.
  • When asked how their pet supply shopping will change if the economy worsens, many owners say they will continue to purchase the same food and medication as before. Most owners say they would reduce spending on toys and grooming supplies if necessary.

Despite economic concerns, most pet owners feel that pet ownership is a source of emotional support, with 77% saying that spending time with their pets helps relieve stress.
