Monrovia Offers Advice on Dog-Friendly Gardening
The folks at Monrovia Nursery recently posted a helpful how-to list for creating a dog-friendly yard. You can read the full article, along with some suggested dog-friendly plants to consider, HERE.
Here are a few highlights to help you create a dog-friendly outdoor space:
- Make sure that your fencing is escape-proof (tall enough for jumpers and deep enough for diggers!)
- Choose plants that are non-toxic to pets and safe if your dog likes to nibble on them. Some common garden plants can be poisonous, so do your research.
- Provide shady and soft places for your dog to hang out in.
- Train your dog to walk on designated paths and stay away from temptations like digging in the dirt.
- Consider adding dog-specific elements to your yard, like dog runs, agility courses, kiddie pools, and sandboxes.
- Avoid treating your lawn with dangerous pesticides and herbicides and don’t use chemically treated mulches or cocoa mulch.
- Plant an edible garden just for your dog. Good vegetable choices for dogs include carrots, spinach, green beans, and zucchini.
