May 2-8 is National Pet Week!

National Pet Week is an annual event created in 1981 to celebrate all the pets that enrich our lives and to encourage responsible pet care and ownership.

The American Veterinary Medical Association has assigned specific pet care themes to each day of the week.  Here’s an overview, you can learn more about each topic by clicking the links on the National Pet Week web page.

Sunday:  Choosing a pet

Select the pet that’s right for your family’s lifestyle and make a commitment for that pet’s life.

Monday:  Socialization

Help your pet get comfortable in new situations by exposing it safely to a variety of interactions with other animals, people, places, and activities.

Tuesday:  Nutrition and exercise

Nutrition and exercise are important to both weight management and overall health.

Wednesday:  Preventive veterinary care

Regular preventive care is critical to keep pets healthy and improve both quality and length of life.

Thursday:  Safe travel with pets

Traveling with pets requires advance planning and coordination to keep everybody safe.

Friday:  Emergency preparedness

As a pet owner, you need to plan ahead and include your pets in your family’s emergency plan.

Saturday:  Senior pets

Pets are living longer now than they ever have before—and as pets get older, they need extra care and attention.

The AVMA is also offering a Zoom webinar on the human-animal bond on Friday, May 7, 2021.  It’s open to both veterinary professionals and the public and is free to attend.
