March 20-26 is National Pet Poison Prevention Week
Awareness about the hazards of toxic substances for pets is always an important topic for pet owners. This month, pet poison prevention is the focus during the week of March 20th to March 26th.
New York’s Animal Medical Center has created this useful infographic listing the most common pet poisons for 2021, as reported by the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center:
They also have these helpful reminders for pet owners who suspect that their pets have ingested something harmful.
Signs of poisoning in pets:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Drooling
- Lack of coordination
- Lethargy
- Collapse
- Excessive thirst
- Unusual behaviors
Here’s what you need to do if you suspect poisoning:
- Call your veterinarian or an animal emergency clinic right away. You can also call the ASPCA’s Pet Poison Hotline at (888) 426-4435.
- Tell them what you think your pet has ingested and how much.
- Bring the container (or take a picture of it) when you go to the vet’s office.
- Keep track of all symptoms your pet is experiencing.
- Be honest with your vet about what your pet has ingested, even if you’re uncomfortable sharing that information…your pet’s life may be on the line.
