Fish Vets Seek to Become Recognized Veterinary Specialists

Fish keepers seeking expert veterinary care for their pet fish may soon be able to find vets that are officially certified as specialists in this unique area of care.

The American Association of Fish Veterinarians and the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association are developing a petition to have fish practice recognized as a veterinary specialty within the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.

In an article in AVMA News, an expert in fish practice notes that board certification would be beneficial to both fish vets and their clients. “The specialty is going to allow clients to identify veterinarians who have the knowledge and expertise that prepares them to provide high-quality veterinary care,” he said.

Having board-certified veterinarians care for pet fish can reassure owners that their fish are getting the best and most humane care possible.

This area of veterinary expertise is important for pet owners, but it’s also needed in areas such as zoos and aquariums, commercial aquaculture, academic research, and natural resource conservation.
