April is Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month
Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis) is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, and is transmitted by the bite of infected deer ticks. Dogs are at increased risk for contracting Lyme disease in the spring and summer months.
Lyme disease has been found in all 50 U.S. states, although it is more common in some regions than others.
The American Veterinary Medical Association has the following prevention tips to protect your dog (and other pets allowed outdoors):
- Use tick prevention products.
- Talk to your veterinarian about vaccinating your dog against Lyme disease.
- Avoid tall grasses, marshes, and wooded areas when walking your dog.
- Check for ticks on yourself and your pets when you go back indoors.
- Clear shrubbery around your home and keep lawns well maintained.
Look for the following symptoms if you suspect Lyme disease in your dog:
- Fever
- Lack of appetite
- Lameness
- Swollen joints
- Lethargy
