The Benefits of Pet Ownership for Seniors
Living with a pet can significantly boost the overall health of seniors in a surprising number of ways. The best pets for seniors are often healthy older cats and dogs, because they are less boisterous and easier to care for. On the surface, pets provide companionship, thereby reducing loneliness in older adults. However, studies have shown that there’s much more to it than that.
MENTAL HEALTH
Pet ownership is associated with a wide spectrum of mental health benefits for seniors. These largely stem from the trickle-down effects of companionship and unconditional affection that pets offer as well as the social and brain health advantages that come with following pet care routines. Major advantages include the following:
- Emotional support
- Lower levels of depression and anxiety, including symptoms of PTSD
- Improved sleep
- Reduced stress
- Improved cognitive function (from engaging with both the pet and daily pet care-related tasks; seniors who have dogs are more likely to interact with neighbors while out walking them, reducing isolation and fostering healthy socializing habits)\
- Lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-causing conditions\
- Increased happiness and improved overall outlook on life

PHYSICAL HEALTH
The physical health benefits of pet ownership for older adults are equally impressive. Owning a pet encourages seniors to engage in regular physical activity, which is essential for maintaining mobility and overall health. Dog owners in particular tend to walk more, helping them stay active and fit. This comes with a host of related health benefits:
- Lower blood pressure
- Decreased cholesterol and triglycerides; improved overall cardiovascular health
- Reduced likelihood of obesity
- Stronger muscles and bones, which boosts mobility
- Enhanced sense of balance, which is important for preventing falls
- Improved pain management
- Decreased risk of developing cancer
- Fewer visits to the doctor

Pet Ownership Resources for Seniors in Hawaii
Before adopting any pet, senior residents in Hawaii will need to consider how they can build a lifestyle that sets themselves and their pets up for success. Here are some resources for seniors that can help with education, pet care, supplies, and accommodations.
Pet-Friendly Affordable Housing
Securing pet-friendly housing can be challenging for seniors who rent. In Hawaii, several organizations are working to provide housing resources for seniors to ensure they can own a pet legally and affordably. Organizations like the Hawaiian Humane Society can help pet owners find suitable accommodations.
Dog-Friendly Parks and Recreational Areas
Access to dog-friendly beaches, parks, and recreational areas is vital for the well-being of both pets and their owners. These spaces not only promote physical activity for dogs and people alike, but also offer socialization opportunities, helping seniors connect with other pet owners and form supportive communities. Before you adopt a dog, familiarize yourself with dog-friendly outdoor spaces near your current or future pet-friendly home.
Affordable Pet Care Supplies and Services
Affordable pet care is another critical need for senior pet owners. The cost of pet food and other supplies as well as veterinary care can add up, making it difficult for seniors on a fixed income to manage.
Older pet owners should look for pet supply retailers that offer senior discounts and consider purchasing pet insurance to avoid high veterinary bills if your companion becomes injured or ill. (You can find a list of the best and most affordable pet insurance Hawaii offers here). Lucky Paws offers a helpful list of organizations that provide spay and neuter services in Hawaii.
For seniors who find themselves in major financial constraints, the Pet Kokua Program operates a pet food bank, low or no-cost microchipping services, and reduced or waived fees for spaying or neutering your pet. FACE Hawaii provides financial assistance to pet owners in need, helping cover emergency veterinary expenses for those without pet insurance.
Pet ownership brings numerous benefits to seniors, from improved mental health to enhanced physical well-being. In Hawaii, various resources and programs support senior pet owners, ensuring they can enjoy the companionship of their pets without undue financial or logistical burdens. By leveraging these resources, seniors can continue to experience the joy and health benefits that come with having a furry friend by their side.
Support Senior Pet Ownership With FACE Hawaii
Established in 2006 by a group of veterinarians and concerned community members, the Foundation for Animal Care and Education (FACE) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) public charity that provides financial grants for animal owners who are unable to afford the cost of their pet’s emergency or critical care. The FACE’s Community Outreach Program additionally focuses on connecting underserved pet owners with resources to veterinary care and pet supplies.
In 2019, Honolulu veterinarian Dr. Erika Sox became aware of FACE Foundation and the support we provide to families in need. FACE Hawaii is now official and growing! Other veterinary clinics have begun to work with FACE to save beloved pets in need of lifesaving care on Oahu, and our goal is to eventually expand our network of participating veterinarians throughout all of the Hawaiian islands.
In the spirit of laulima (cooperation), please join us in support of our mission. Your donation will remain in the islands to help ensure that no Hawaii pet dies solely due to financial hardship.
