Antibiotic resistance in humans is a health problem that is often in the news, but did you know that our dogs, cats, and other pets can also become resistant to antibiotics when they are prescribed too frequently?

The CDC has created some helpful guidance for pet owners, so you can do your part in making sure that when your pet needs antibiotics, the treatment will be effective.

Here are a few tips on responsible antibiotic use for pet owners:

• Talk to your vet about preventive care and good hygiene as ways to cut back on antibiotic use.
• If your vet does prescribe antibiotics, make sure to follow directions on proper dosage and length of treatment.
• Store antibiotics and all drugs in a safe location to prevent accidental ingestion.
• Dispose of unused antibiotics properly, such as with a drug take back program, and never flush them down the drain or toilet.

• Keep in mind that if your pet is antibiotic resistant, treatment may take longer than normal and be more expensive.
• Infections can spread from pets to people (and people to pets) so be sure to take basic safety precautions like hand washing and regular cleaning of supplies like bowls and bedding.
