You may have seen headlines about a contaminated pet food that has been recalled due to a large number of canine deaths.

A pet food known as Sportmix is being recalled because it has been linked to the deaths of over 70 dogs and severe illness in at least 80 others.

What do you need to know to keep your pet safe?

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, which has issued an alert with several state agricultural departments, the manufacturer of Sportmix (Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.) has expanded their recall to include many products made with corn in their Oklahoma facility.

Cat owners should be aware that this expanded recall also includes cat food in addition to dog food. A complete list is available on the FDA’s official website.

These products are being recalled because they contain potentially fatal levels of aflatoxins.  Aflatoxins are toxic substances produced by a mold called Aspergillus flavus, which grows on corn and other grains.

What are the symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning?  The FDA tells pet owners and veterinarians to look for symptoms such as:

• Sluggishness
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting
• Jaundice
• Diarrhea

Besides risk of death, affected pets can also suffer liver damage.  The amount of the toxin can build up to a high level in your pet because pets tend to eat the same food every day.
